Alle sei, puntualmente, il sole tramontò dietro le Blue Mountains in un’ultima fiammata d’oro, un manto d’ombra viola si stese su Richmond Road, mentre grilli e raganelle, negli eleganti giardini, cominciavano a frinire e gracidare.
A parte questi suoni, l’ampia strada deserta era silenziosa. I ricchi proprietari delle grandi ville, direttori di banca, dirigenti d’azienda e alti funzionari, erano a casa dalle cinque e in quel momento parlavano con la moglie della trascorsa giornata, o facevano una doccia o si cambiavano d’abito. Entro una mezz’ora la strada si sarebbe rianimata per l’afflusso degli invitati ai cocktail, ma al momento in quell’aristocratico tratto di “Rich Road”, com’era chiamato dai commercianti di Kingston, regnava solo l’atmosfera d’attesa di un palcoscenico ancora vuoto e l’intenso profumo notturno dei gelsomini.
